Purchasing, planting, and caring for your Banana Plants.

Learn from other people's mistakes. What I mean by that is;

Purchase from someone who has some knowledge about Banana plants and can confirm from (the past fruit of their own plants crop) that it is the variety that you seek. If they do not have photos from their own crop, you may end up with a different variety than you paid for.

Note: I have purchased a Banana plant from (unnamed) seller only to plant it and wait out, a hurricane, freeze, etc.… for two years only to find out that it was not the variety that I was told it was. That was a waste of time and money.

Only purchase “one variety plant”, plant it and when it sprouts suckers, separate them, replant them, and you will have free Banana plants.

Planting, just don’t dig a hole and plant. Dig a bed that is LARGE, I dig nine ALL 6ft x 6ft x 3 ft in depth. I then fill with one ft of chips on the bottom, mix composted horse manure, with some sandy soil, and two-year-old composted arborist chips that turned into black gold, and mix in some biochar. I then pack the bed. I then dig the hole to the size of the potted Banana plant and plant. I then aerate, and top it with a foot of fresh chips, and water in and get the air out. fertilize with compost tea and watch it grow like crazy.

Watering, I am in a microclimate area, and my water table is shallow. Meaning close to the surface. So all my banana plants have access to 24/7 water supply. This is why I chose to grow Banana plants.

Now if you are not in a shallow water table area, you will need to give your Banana plant daily watering. If not your banana plants will have lack of needed hydration and it will show in, that your plant and fruit will not flourish like they should.

Fertilizing, I fertilize using compost tea that I make; I give my banana plants five gallons at least four times a year if not more. I also use fresh ash all around my plants.

Hard freeze, When a hard freeze is about to hit, I pile on two feet of fresh arborist chips which provide natural heat protecting the corm.

I notice that the day after a frost, the chips have no frost on them while the surrounding aris does.

Hope this helps.

The Frugal Hugel Gardener

People always ask what I do with all the bananas?

I tell them that I ripen, peel, place on parchment paper, place in freezer, and the next day I place in gallon freezer bags and store in chest freeze. (hundreds of lbs) The bananas last for a year no problem. I then use them in all my shakes, baking bread, banking muffins, etc. throughout the year. I usually run out and can't wait till next season's crop, then repeat. oh, and my chickens get some Banana treats as well. lol
